QUESTION: Hi – My 6 year old son has enamel hypoplasia due to birth trauma on all four of his his 6 year molars and just had a small cavity filled in one. His dentist said there was not much that could be done because the teeth are so chalky the sealer he is using will not stick. He also stated we should prepare for him to have cavities in all four and potentially lose them. Do you have any treatment options or products that might help save his teeth? Thank you for your time. – JV in AZ
ANSWER: Someone is terrorizing you. RUN away. Enamel hypoplasia can easily be exaggerated. If he’s eating normal food and not too much sugar too often, he should come though this in good shape. More than the food it is how often it is eaten. Even 3 meals and a snack is a bite too often. The classic reason people are overweight and have dental troubles is we eat too much, too often, too sweet. A well-rounded diet should leave the teeth rather clean, like in France: salad last.
The calcium materials do re-mineralize the enamel easily. You might get him used to Oral-Cal as a brushing agent and NOTHING else for cleaning the mouth, water and soft brush, not pastes, or flossing…, NOTHING, just brush with Oral-Cal.
